Anne and Gilles Brun are the proud heirs of a long lineage of farmers, representing the fifth generation to manage the family estate located in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. For decades, this estate has embodied a deep connection to the Provençal land, initiated by their parents, Jean-Pierre and Mireille Brun. Together, they have passed down not only a passion for agriculture but also a strong commitment to preserving the estate’s lands, ensuring continuity in the cultivation and respect for local agricultural traditions.
In the face of modern agricultural challenges, Anne and Gilles Brun decided to redirect the family estate toward arboriculture, focusing specifically on olive trees, the timeless symbol of Provence. This decision marked a significant transformation for the estate, which was previously focused on vegetable farming. With the support and guidance of their parents, they made this transition with boldness and determination, breathing new life into the olive-growing tradition of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. This strategic choice culminated in the creation of the Moulin du Calanquet, contributing to the revival of olive oil production in the region.
The family estate is home to five iconic varieties of olive trees from the Alpilles: Aglandau, Salonenque, Grossane, Verdale, and Picholine. Each of these varieties imparts unique aromas to the olive oil produced by the Moulin du Calanquet. Aglandau is valued for its herbaceous flavors and peppery notes, Salonenque for its mildness, while Grossane brings exceptional roundness. Verdale and Picholine, on the other hand, offer fruitier and spicier notes, creating a perfect balance between tradition and refinement.
To support this evolution, Anne and Gilles have made substantial improvements to the estate. Mindful of the environmental impact of their activities, they have implemented sustainable practices. Their efforts have been rewarded with High Environmental Value (HVE) certification, recognizing their optimized management of natural resources. The installation of water-efficient irrigation systems and strict waste management practices have helped preserve the surrounding ecosystem. Today, their estate is a model of sustainable farming, respectful of nature and biodiversity, while ensuring high-quality olive oil production.
